For the rest of us, the commerciality of it makes it more available and more consistent. For wine snobs out there, the Prisoner no longer holds the appeal it once did. The original blend had quite the cult following with limited cases released, but now you can find the Prisoner Red Blend commercially available. However, it was sold to the Prisoner Wine Company an sold again in 2016. The Prisoner Red Blend was created in 2000 by Dave Phinney, the man behind Orin Swift Cellars (the label now owned by the massive E& J Gallo group). It’s a pretty punchy wine, so be sure the food flavors are similarly bold or else it will bulldozer over anything too nuanced. Serve “cellar chilled” (around 60-65 degree F). Food Pairings & Serving Suggestions: This wine did open up a bit in the glass, but I don’t think you need to decant it.I found a restaurant with a half priced wine night and was able to pick the bottle up for under $45! I paired it with a cheese plate from the hotel lounge while watching The Proposal and Serendipity on TV…let’s just say it wasn’t a bad night J Due to my husband’s work schedule and an important client dinner, I ended up celebrating the day of our wedding anniversary in a hotel room with the Prisoner to keep me company until the dinner ended. If you recognize the photo as a hotel room shot, you’d be right. It will be a fun experience to identify the flavors, it goes well with food, and you can typically find it at a price that won’t break the bank but still feel special. With the recognition that some may scoff at the suggestion, I do recommend trying this by the bottle. While fruit flavors are present, it’s these other flavors that make the wine memorable. The wine hits you with ripe fruits, obvious oak aging (on the sweeter side rather than smoky), vanilla, clove, chocolate. But, just went I didn’t think I’d be able to drink much of the wine, the flavors pulled back leaving a soft, well balanced finished. My most recent adventure with the Prisoner was at the tail end of a cold and even with a muted sense of taste, the intensity of its flavors was almost too much. It’s unabashedly bold and straightforward. For novice wine drinkers this wine doesn’t leave you guessing.
